Derek prayed his prayer in the flash of reality he found himself. A piercing sound of metal on metal. The furious tumble on pavement. The crushing underbelly of an automobile. His motorcycle lay distant from where his body eventually stopped. Derek thought for certain these were his last words.
The first words he heard gave him deep concern: "Hang on, you're going to be alright." Derek knew these words meant exactly the opposite.
The accident took much from Derek leaving him with a shattered clavicle, a busted pelvis, a great loss of blood, and the amputation of his left leg just below the knee. But the accident also gave him something: fight. After 9 days in the St. David’s Medical Center in Round Rock, Texas, Derek went home to begin the next stage of his recovery. The accident left an indelible mark on his life for sure. From that day forward Derek's life found a new normal: the necessity to fight for every day.
By God's grace, Derek now has a prosthetic and is living life to the fullest!
Derek is now on the Board of Directors for Isaiah 40:31 Foundation.
